Poverty Tourism: A sustainable model of tourism?

Done this research in Dharavi area of Mumbai which is the biggest slums in the Asia continent. After interviewing slum tour companies, it is evident that Slumdog Millionaire played a crucial role in the rise of Poverty Tourism in Mumbai. While many tour companies still disagree with the term "Poverty Tourism" and choose to refer it as "slum tours" instead, there is no denying that every tour operator is profiting from this business. Throughout our research is that 62% of the general public surveyed does not know about the poverty tourism. This indicates even with presence of Bollywood and films mentioning slum tourism, it has not garnered enough attention. 44% are not sure whether slum tours are safe or not, since "slums" has an unsafe connotation to it. Hence, poverty tourism can be a sustainable model of tourism and there is a scope for it to grow into something bigger. In conclusion, a tour company owner said, "City tours may end, slum tours will never." because he believes it will take at least 70 years for slums to be completely demolished.
