Project - Stem cells as immunomodulators in glioblastoma therapeutics.

  • Glioblastoma, a highly aggressive brain cancer, presents formidable treatment challenges due to its invasive nature and limited therapeutic options.
  • Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) possess a natural affinity for brain tumors and hold promise for delivering therapeutic agents.
  • This study examined the in vitro effects of Wharton's jelly-derived MSCs alone and in conjunction with Temozolomide on glioma cells, focusing on patient-derived primary glioma cells.
  • Results demonstrated the anti-proliferative effects of MSCs on glioma cells, with a notable impact observed on oligodendroglioma cells.
  • Notably, MSCs exhibited efficacy against Temozolomide-resistant tumor cells, both as standalone treatment and in combination with Temozolomide.
  • These findings underscore the potential of MSCs as a viable therapeutic approach for glioblastoma, warranting further exploration for clinical application.

Consultant Scientist

Cell Space Research Foundation
2016.07 - 2018.03

  • Lead researcher overseeing protocol design and development for utilizing stem cells as immunomodulators in glioma therapeutics.
  • Investigator specializing in neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune diseases, and the application of mesenchymal stem cells.
  • Scientist in charge of managing a tumor tissue repository and facilitating dissemination of patient-derived glioma tissues for research endeavors.

  • Intra OP and ICU monitoring of patient adverse events
  • Preparing manuscripts for external publications in Neuro-surgery including case reports and case series
  • Preparing protocols for new surgical methods by liaising with lead surgeons.

Research Fellow

Cochin University of Science & Technology
2004.12 - 2009.11
  • Bioactivity Profile of Polyunsaturated Fatty acids from Marine Species, specializing in Marine Pharmacognosy
  • Investigated bio-chemical and bio-medical characteristics of PUFA extracts from marine fish species
  • Polyunsaturated fatty acids extracted from two different species were subjected to analysis of, EPA and DHA contents and assessed the seasonal fluctuations for each species
  • The extracts were then evaluated for their inhibitory effects on different strains of pathogenic bacteria, in vivo diabetic studies on mice models and in vitro cytotoxic studies on cancer cell lines MCF-7 & DU -145.
  • Findings demonstrated potent anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, and anti-hypolipidemic effects of DHA & EPA extracts, alongside observed seasonal fluctuations of these fatty acids throughout the year.
