1. Operational Excellence & Safety
· Flawless Machinery Operation: Ensuring the main engine, boilers, purifiers, pumps, and auxiliary systems run efficiently and reliably across all voyages, often in harsh conditions.
· Cargo Operations: Supervising the complex cargo pumping, heating, and stripping systems crucial for loading/discharging oil safely and meeting discharge criteria.
· Zero Incidents: Maintaining an outstanding safety record for the engine department (no major injuries, fires, or pollution incidents).
· Pollution Prevention: Strict adherence to MARPOL regulations, particularly Annex I (oil). Successfully managing oily water separators, incinerators, and ensuring zero illegal discharges.
· Emergency Systems Readiness: Guaranteeing all emergency systems (fire pumps, lifeboat engines, emergency generator, quick-closing valves) are 100% operational at all times.
2. Technical Management & Problem-Solving
· Major Repairs at Sea: Diagnosing and executing critical repairs while underway, avoiding costly towage and off-hire time.
· Dry-Docking & Surveys: Successfully planning and executing dry-docking periods, passing major Class and Statutory surveys (e.g., docking, special, boiler surveys) without major deficiencies.
· Budget & Spare Parts Management: Controlling the engine department budget, managing inventory, and minimizing costs through efficient sourcing and careful planning.
· Innovative Solutions: Designing and fabricating temporary repairs or improvements to equipment using limited resources available on board.
3. Compliance & Administration
· Perfect Audit Records: Achieving clean sheets during Port State Control (PSC), vetting (SIRE, CDI), Flag State, and company audits.
· Documentation: Maintaining impeccable engineering logs, records, and manuals in accordance with ISM (International Safety Management) Code.
· Certification & Planning: Ensuring all certificates are valid, and planning maintenance using the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) effectively.
4. Leadership & Team Management
· Training & Mentoring: Developing junior engineers and ratings, preparing them for promotions and certificates of competency.
· Building a Cohesive Team: Fostering a culture of safety, professionalism, and teamwork in a multinational environment.
· Managing Crew Changes: Integrating new crew members smoothly and maintaining department efficiency during rotations.
5. Environmental & Efficiency Gains
· Fuel Efficiency: Implementing measures that significantly reduced fuel oil consumption (e.g., optimizing trim, speed, or auxiliary usage).
· Energy Saving: Projects that reduced electrical power waste (e.g., LED retrofits, Power optimization).
· Waste Reduction: Minimizing generated waste oil, sludge, and garbage, and ensuring its proper disposal.
