Summary

  • Graduated from CALCUTTA MEDICAL COLLEGE IN 1999. Completed MD IN ANAESTHESIOLOGY IN SCB MEDICAL COLLEGE, Cuttack, in 2006.
  • PDCC in Cardiac and Neuro Anesthesia in SRICHITRA TIRUNAL INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES, Trivandrum, and FNB in Cardiac Anesthesiology in 2010.
  • Presently working as a Senior Consultant, Cardiac Anesthesiology, Critical Care and ECMO Specialist and Director, ECMO Services in Medica Super specialty Hospital, Kolkata, India, with experience in advanced critical care and organ support including extracorporeal therapies.
  • I run an active and largely successful ECMO programme which is ELSO recognized, having performed the largest number of ECMO runs in eastern India with good outcomes. I believe hospitals should be empathetic towards patients and all the staff and it is best done by physicians with experience and training in hospital administration.
  • Pursuing Executive Program in Healthcare Management, at IIM Kolkata with a vision to be a catalyst in the growth and development of this sector.
  • Since India is a fast growing country, with largest population, there is a vast majority of elderly people. With the minimal social support, their need for dignified life with proper healthcare access is lacking. I have accepted this as a challenge and responsibility, and have started an organization named AGEWELL 24 7 with a few like-minded individuals to provide healthcare and social support both as home based care and transitional care services. There shall be significant tech based support and scope to scale up services throughout the country. The goal is to have healthy dignified adult living.

Critical Care Experience - Present

Presently I run a 12 bedded Cardio-Pulmonary ICU(Medical) and an 18 bedded CV ICU (Surgical). All sick cardiac and respiratory patients with or without multi organ failure (pneumonia, ARDS, acute heart failure, acute MI with cardiogenic shock, thoracic trauma etc) are treated in the cardio-pulmonary ICU, including use of advanced ventilatory care, ECMO and other mechanical circulatory support devices. Cardio thoracic and vascular ICU patients include adult and pediatric (congenital) CTVS post-surgical patients, are managed here, with use of advanced hemodynamic monitoring, and Mechanical Circulatory Supports. Various methods of non-invasive ventilation, bedside bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomy and cardio-respiratory rehab are also practiced. Extra-Corporeal therapies including ECMO, CRRT/SLED, plasma exchange etc. are frequently performed, both in adult and pediatric patients.

ECMO Centre Experience

The ECMO journey in Medica began in 2014 as part of CTVS, Cardiac Critical Care and Perfusion Dept with a solitary ECMO machine., 1st on road ECMO transport in eastern India, 2nd and 3rd ECMO console added as the demand for ECMO was increasing, 1st ECMO transport in fixed wing aircraft, Presently our center is the regional referral center for ECMO and advanced cardio-respiratory support, with patients being referred both from West Bengal and other states. ECMO is provided to both adults and pediatric patients, for both cardiac and respiratory indications. In suitable candidates, ECMO has been used as a bridge to transplant (heart/lungs) or VAD in our center.
