  • I completed a clinical attachment in Rheumatology at South Tees Hospital between 1st October and 15th October 2023 under the supervision of Dr Fiona Clarke. This post gave me a great outlook towards how my clinical position in the NHS is going to be. During the attachment period, I participated in the following activities -
  • Clinical Experience Gained -

During this tenure I was able to observe and assist in the management of a wide variety of Rheumatology cases like Polymyalgia Rheumatica, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Joint effusion, Raynauds' disease to name a few. I also assisted my registrars in History taking and procedures like Cannulations, Phlebotomy, Joint aspiration and Urinary Catheter insertions.

The ward rounds held everyday was extremely beneficial as I got to know, not only the medical management of the patient but their overall well being. The inputs given by the occupational therapist, physiotherapist and social services provided me to understand how the holistic patient care is given.

I also learned how to operate the software (NERVECENTRE) for filling the discharge letter, prescribing medicines, writing referrals, writing the plan of action for the patient and many more things.

I also played a lead role in a clinical audit while I was doing my attachment, but due to time constraints i managed to do only 1 cycle of it.

I also attended the handover sessions and talked to patients about their health and took history from them which enhanced by communication skills a lot.

I also attended a conference held by Rheumatology department discussing all the latest advancements and problems faced by medical professionals during their duties in the hospital.

I also attended to OPD patients with the consultants and observes the patients and aso performed clinical examinations under their guidance.

I also observed the patients taking treatment in the OPD for their different Rheumatological manifestations.

It allowed me to understand the importance of evidence-based practice and quality improvement early in my career. Herein I learned to critically evaluate my clinical skills and compare them against established standards.
