Research Title: SOME STUDIES RELATED TO IMPROVING PERFORMANCE OF DIESEL ENGINES USING PRE HEATED FUEL

Designation: Part Time

Research highlights:

  • Developed a novel preheated fuel injection system by modifying a high-pressure diesel injection setup operating at 200 bar with an integrated electric fuel heating mechanism.
  • Investigated diesel engine performance with preheated diesel fuel (100°C–250°C) across varied injection timings to optimise efficiency.
  • Improved brake thermal efficiency (BTE) by up to 9% and reduced brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) by up to 9%.
  • Achieved significant emission reductions: NOx (up to 43%), smoke (up to 63%), CO (up to 67%), and HC emissions (up to 25%).
  • Demonstrated fuel preheating's enhancement of atomization, combustion efficiency, and diffusion combustion characteristics, contributing to improved engine performance.
  • Identified optimal engine operation with preheated fuel at 160°C–220°C and retarded injection timings of 17°–20° BTDC.
  • Extended research to include preheated Waste Cooking Oil Methyl Ester (WCME) biodiesel (B100), showcasing potential for sustainable fuel alternatives without blending requirements.
  • Demonstrated that preheated biodiesel can achieve diesel-like performance with lower emissions and improved sustainability.

Research Title: A MODIFIED APPROACH TO THE DESIGN OF TWO STROKE SI ENGINE

Key outcomes

  • Designed and developed novel two-stroke spark ignition (SI) engine by modifying conventional four-stroke SI engine architecture, enhancing overall design efficiency.
  • Integrated advanced features, including inlet valve, exhaust port, gasoline direct injection (GDI), and supercharging system, to significantly enhance engine performance.
  • Developed unique valve and port timing mechanism, optimising charge exchange and combustion characteristics for improved operational efficiency.
  • Successfully reduced the scavenging losses associated with conventional two-stroke petrol engines, leading to improved fuel utilization and lower emissions.
  • Received an Indian Patent Grant in 2022 from the Indian Patent Office for the innovative engine design and methodology.
