STUDIES ON THE EFFICACY OF BEAUVERIA BASSIANA (BALSAMO) AGAINST MAJOR PESTS OF BHENDI

Studies were undertaken to test the efficacy of entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana against major pest of bhendi under glass house and field condition.

Intensive survey was carried out at different locactions of Coimbatore for the occurrence of sucking pests and fruit borers. Among the sucking pests, aphids and whitefly and spider mites and among the borers, Earias vitella (Fabricius) and Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) predominantly occurred in farmers field. Eight isolates of B. bassiana were isolated from infected insects and their efficacy was tested against insect pests.

Beauveria bassiana was found to be effective in reducing the incidence of sucking pests and fruit borers. B. bassiana was found to be the best treatment among the four fungal pathogen in the field trial in reducing the pest population. However, endosulfan 0.0% was significantly superior followed by neem oil 2% in lowering the pest population.

Induced systematic resistance through biochemical analysis revealed that increased activity of the enzymes viz., peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase and catalase in the entomopathogenic fungi treated plants against insects pests of bhendi.
