  • Children at play helped me understand and identify the importance of play in child’s cognitive and social development.
  • A day in a child’s life helped in analyzing how the socio-economic status of a child affects his/her social position among his/her peers.
  • How the Mid-Day Meal Program is an allure for children to come to school.
  • Error Analysis proved to be extremely helpful in identifying a student’s thinking process when dealing with any subject.
  • Project on Moral Development in Children helped gain insight into the developing notions of morality in different age groups.

Field Training

  • Participated in the school contact program in New Delhi where we observed teaching methodologies used by the teacher and the associated engagement level in the student.
  • Closely observed the working of an innovative school in Jaipur, a city in India. We observed the amalgamation of John Dewey’s philosophy of ‘learning by doing’ and Rabindranath Tagore’s philosophy of ‘harmony between learner and his/her surrounding, society and nature’.
  • Observed a primary school in New Delhi to understand the Teaching & Learning processes being followed.
  • Examined the processes followed to help a school function by observing and interviewing the Principal and teachers in a Jesuit school in New Delhi.

Learning

  • Focus on the mind and behavior of children from parental development through adolescence.
  • Planning, Organizing and Managing a school. From curriculum development, creating schedules to setting exams to administration responsibilities.
  • Gained an understanding of the basic concepts of education as illustrated by Jean Piaget, Maria Montessori, Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, John Dewey, Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi.
  • Curriculum development to create positive improvements in lesson plans.
  • Gained awareness on how gender influences education.

Training

Theatre workshops under Sukesh Arora, a well-known theatre personality, focusing on the contribution of theatre in handling day to day classroom scenarios. Workshop on self-development conducted by PRAVAH, an NGO in New Delhi. Workshop on law for Children & Women, conducted by a lawyer Sr. Jessy, in Jesus & Mary College. This workshop addressed the atrocities faced by children and women at the hands of their family and society. Workshop on Mathematics in Primary schools that covered the reasons why Math is a subject that children fear and techniques to make it engaging and fun.
