- Performing head-to-tail examinations of animals upon intake - aging by teeth, noting any medical concerns/starting treatment if necessary, vaccinating & deworming, determining if animal can be sent to adoption floor or if should be housed in isolation.
- Handling animals of all behavior and health levels once entering the intake center (feral cats, behavior dogs, emaciated animals, etc).
- Determining if animals need behavior modification drugs if necessary prior to vetting, administering after getting approval from DVMs.
- Dispensing morning and evening medications, administering to all canine and felines housed in the building. *Working through a food-ladder prior to pilling if possible.
- Daily walkthroughs of all animals in the shelter to note any possible disease, post-surgical monitoring/complications
- Administering subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, fluid therapy, microchip implantation
- Ear cleaning & bathing (medicated baths, flea baths, post-parvo bathing)
- Blood drawing from all routes on canine and feline patients - whether to run Heartworm tests (SNAP or in-house reading), FELV/FIV tests, or to send out blood panels
- Collecting and running fecal samples in-house to check for intestinal parasites, or to test for Parvovirus/Panleukopenia
- Collecting cytologies of skin & ears when concern arises, and treating skin & ear infections with our shelter DVM approved protocols on-hand.
- Rounding with shelter DVMs at the end of each day to treat conditions us technicians don't have protocols to treat ahead of time. Scribing for veterinarian, animal restraint, & filling medications/performing requested treatments, assisting with euthanasia & body care.
- Performing physical examinations prior to adopted animals leaving our shelter, updating medical care to properly reflect in computer system, filling go-home medications, preparing adoption contracts & medical disclaimers/notes.
- Training oncoming shelter lab staff, ensuring thoroughness while fostering a place of belonging & communication
