Summary

My overall research experience is in the areas of epigenetics, genomics and biotechnology. It began with my Ph. D. training, continued during my postdoctoral training and continued as an independent faculty for nearly two decades. My primary area of interest is epigenetics. Epigenetics encompasses a gamut of mechanisms of inheritance that are not encoded in the DNA sequence and is found to be widespread in metazoans. It is finding significance in not only how understanding how cells differentiate but also how they adapt to environment and are abrogated under diseased states, including cancer. Using fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, as a model system, my lab has been studying how the epigenetic information is propagated in relation to the processes of DNA replication and DNA repair. Specifically, my lab has been studying how heterochromatin structure, exemplified by the mating type, centromere and telomere loci, which are organized by proteins that are evolutionarily conserved between fission yeast and higher eukaryotes, is established and propagated. Our studies addressing this issue showed that DNA replication machinery is tightly coupled to the evolutionarily conserved epigenetic regulatory proteins- chromodomain protein Swi6/HP1 and histone methyltransferase Clr4/Suv39, to ensure faithful duplication of the status of expression of heterochromatin loci, like the centromere, from the mother to daughter cells.
