Graduate Student Researcher

Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur. Under Prof. Ujjwal Saha
03.2025 - Current
  • Research work aims to investigate the spatio-temporal changes in rainfall and temperature patterns induced by urban expansion
  • Producing time-series land use/land cover maps in QGIS and ArcGIS to quantify urban growth.
  • Integrating Landsat thermal imagery with Indian Meteorological Department station data to identify temperature trends and anomalies.
  • Performing statistical analyses in Python (trend testing, correlation, regression) to correlate urbanization metrics with changes in precipitation intensity and diurnal temperature range.
  • Delivering data-driven insights to support urban climate resilience planning.

Key Technologies: QGIS · ArcGIS · Python (Pandas, NumPy, SciPy) · IMERG/TRMM · Landsat Data

Academic Research Project

GRADUATION DISSERTATION THESIS: ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF LAND UTILIZATION CHANGES ON THE LOCAL CLIMATIC ZONES OF MUMBAI METROPOLITAN REGION.

  • Key Findings
    LULC Trends:
    1990–2020:
Continuous decline of agricultural and forest land, with built‑up rising from ~8% to ~27% of area
    2020–24: First signs of reversal—barren land → agricultural (+4%) & forest (+1%)
LCZ Composition: Predominance of open mid‑rise (LCZ 5: ~50 km²) and large low‑rise (LCZ 8: ~32 km²), limited dense‑tree (A: ~9 km²) and water (G: ~16 km²) zones
Temperature Trends: Fluctuating yet overall stable mean maximum and minimum temperatures across built LCZs
Mann–Kendall tests yield weak positive τ ≈ 0.07 and high p ≈ 0.90, indicating no statistically significant warming in any LCZ 1990–2023

GRADUATION TERM PROJECT: SYNOPTIC CLIMATOLOGICAL STUDY OF MAHARASHTRA:

  • Key Findings
    Climatic Zones
    :
Coastal tropical monsoon (~3,500 mm annual rainfall)
Dry interior ( Tropical rainy regions in Vidarbha and Marathwada
    Extreme Events :
Droughts affecting >40% of population (2018–19)
2019 floods displaced over 5.5 million people
Heatwaves in 2019–20 responsible for >1,000 fatalities
    Sectoral Impacts :
Agriculture: recurrent crop failures, groundwater depletion and salinity
Health: post‑flood spikes in water‑borne/dengue illnesses; heatstroke incidents
Tourism & Industry: flood‑related losses in Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli; shifting crop suitability

GRADUATION TERM PROJECT: ANALYZING THE INFLUENCE OF SST ON THE INTENSITY AND FREQUENCY OF TROPICAL CYCLONE IN BAY OF BENGAL:

  • Key Findings
Bay of Bengal experiences five times more cyclones than the Arabian Sea
Decadal PDI increased sixfold in recent decade
SST alone does not fully explain changes in cyclone behavior—vertical wind shear, humidity, Coriolis force, and inter‑seasonal oscillations also play critical roles

UNDERGRADUATE PROJECT: SOCIO‑ECONOMIC SURVEY OF TELENGA BASTI, BHUBANESWAR

  • Key Findings
    Demographics & Family Structure
    :
    71% patriarchal households
    55% unmarried respondents
Predominantly Telugu speakers (72%), with widespread use of Odia
    Education & Literacy :
    52% overall illiteracy
Only 2.8% of respondents held graduate degrees
High drop‑out rates after grade 6 despite school attendance
    Economic Profile :
    43% work participation rate
74% of workers engaged in casual/daily‑wage labor
    Average household income ₹3–4 K/month
14 families carried debts for marriages, business start‑ups, or vehicle purchases
    Living Conditions :
    90% single‑room brick homes
    Intermittent piped water supply
    Reliance on shared community latrines
