Projects

Projects Title:
Evaluation of Citrullus Species Pectin as a Bioplastics for Food Packaging and Profiling its Bioactives
Description:

The widespread use of fossil fuel-based plastics raises environmental concerns. Naturally obtained biopolymers, which are biodegradable, biocompatible, and non-toxic, offer a safer alternative. This study extracted pectin from Citrullus lanatus (watermelon) waste using the acid extraction method and compared it with commercial pectin using FTIR. Composite pectin films were formulated with pharmacopoeia-approved plasticizers and polyvinyl alcohol, demonstrating high tensile strength and biodegradability. The films are being evaluated for pathogen barrier, soil biodegradation, water retention, SEM, and FTIR properties. GC-MS analysis identified antibacterial and antioxidant molecules in watermelon rind, suggesting multiple applications for watermelon rind-derived bioplastics in food packaging and preservation, offering both environmental and health benefits.
