Job Summary:
As a Patient Care Novice on the Labor and Delivery unit,I provide essential support to the healthcare team by performing patient care technician )as well as shadowing my preceptor (RN) once a month) duties in a specialized obstetric environment. This role includes assisting with routine patient care, supporting labor and delivery processes (including vaginal and cesarean births), and maintaining a safe and efficient environment for patients, families, and staff.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Daily Patient Care:
• Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, toileting, and ambulation.
• Perform vital signs monitoring (e.g., blood pressure, temperature, pulse, oxygen saturation) and glucose checks as needed.
• Maintain patient comfort by assisting with repositioning and ensuring a clean, safe environment.
2. Labor and Delivery Support:
• Assist with setting up and breaking down delivery rooms for vaginal births.
• Provide support during cesarean sections by preparing surgical equipment, restocking supplies, and assisting as needed in the operating room.
• Assist with neonatal care, such as performing baby baths, diaper changes, and ensuring proper swaddling.
3. Team Collaboration:
• Communicate changes in patient status or needs promptly to the nursing team.
• Support nurses during emergencies, including assisting with equipment or patient care tasks.
• Float to other units, such as postpartum or NICU when needed to provide patient care support.
4. Unit Maintenance:
• Restock supplies in labor and delivery rooms, operating rooms, and neonatal areas.
• Ensure patient rooms and workspaces are clean, organized, and ready for use.
• Transport specimens, equipment, and patients as directed.
5. Professional Development:
• Engage in learning opportunities by observing labor and delivery procedures and neonatal care practices.
