Impactful Experience

Losing my father to alcoholism at the age of nine, followed by two close cousins, left me grappling with grief I didn't understand. Growing up with a single mom in a third-world country and watching her struggle to provide for us compounded my challenges. I learned to compartmentalize my grief for years, which later manifested into unrecognized anxiety. It was only upon entering medical school and being introduced to psychiatry that I began to understand my own experiences and mental health. It provided me with the framework to process my grief and anxiety and illuminated the pervasive impact of undiagnosed and stigmatized mental illness in underserved communities like mine. These experiences shaped my purpose to serve in psychiatry.
