I headed two R&D divisions, namely, Materials Physics Division (MPD) carrying out high energy accelerator based research on reactor materials, their characterization by nuclear techniques supported by simulations and theoretical studies and Surface and Nanoscience Division (SND) specializing on Nanostructured materials studies, tuning their surface, structure and properties for technological applications like hard coatings, energy harvesting & storage, sensing etc. My responsibility was planning, guiding and execution of research activities of more than 60 scientific & technical staff and about 20 PhD students, their performance evaluation, project & capital budget proposals, following expenditure and financial commitments, procurement of state of the art research equipment and setting up of research laboratories with associated infrastructure. As professor, HBNI, I was Co-Chairman of Chemical Sciences Committee, Member of Physical Sciences Committee, Chairman and member of many doctoral committees and guided Ph.D, M.Phil, M.Tech and M.Sc., students.

Some of my achievements are:

  • Commissioning of a Dual Ion Irradiation Facility
  • Setting up of an 200 KeV ion implanter
  • VGN based coin cell supercapacitor
  • Reviving of Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer (SIMS)
  • Insulating coating for Sodium pump
  • FIB based nanostructuring, patterning and device fabrication
  • Organised International and National conferences
  • Establishing ~ 1000 m2 materials research laboratory
  • DPR for capital projects costing about Rs 95 crores and Rs 10 crores.

In addition to being Associate Director of A&NG, I was the Head of Materials Physics Division (MPD) responsible for directing, guiding and executing research activities on irradiation response of reactor core & structural materials and potential nuclear waste storage materials.

  • Coupling ionoluminescence spectrometer to 150 keV accelerator
  • Setting up a High Resolution RBS
  • Developing irradiation creep beam-line

As a member of SSS, I initiated and carried out research activities on nanocrystalline & nanostructured materials, set up laboratories for their controlled synthesis, investigation of reaction mechanism & kinetics and their nanoscale characterisation using multi mode scanning probe microscope (SPM), Scanning Nearfield Optical Microscope (SNOM) with HR spectrometer and Field emission SEM.

Some of my achievements are:

  • Set up sputter deposition and Plasma Assisted CVD systems
  • Set up Thermogravimetric and Mass spectrometry based evolved gas analyser
  • Set up multi-mode SPM, SNOM and FE-SEM
  • Set up controlled exposure facility for growing protective over layers and coatings.

Under bilateral collaborative initiative, I was invited to work as a Guest scientist at Forschungzentrum, Juelich. I worked on developing rare earth (RE) substituted high temperature thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for turbine applications. Investigated the effect of RE ion addition on the microstructure, adhesion and high temperature oxidation properties TiAl based TBCs.
