Peer Supporter

  • Tata Institute of Social Sciences has two levels of mental health support mechanisms for the students who study there. The lower level is the Peer Support mechanism where students are given training to become a Peer Supporter and then are available to provide mental health support to the peers in distress. In case the Peer Supporter detects issues that require professional support, the peer is referred to the second level of the mental support mechanism, TISS Counseling Centre, which has professional counselors equipped to deal with such cases. The services of the centre are open to all students and anyone can directly approach the counselors too.
  • The premise of the Peer Support Program is that the supporters would understand their peer better because they're at the same level and sometimes an empathetic ear and safe space is all people need to share their burdens and feel better.
  • Provided complex crisis intervention and stabilization to peers in psychological distress.
  • Delivered individualized support to peers working through issues such as stress, burnout, anxiety etc.

  • Interned for a period of 2 months with the District Health Services System to understand the four levels at which healthcare is provided by the government in rural India.
  • The National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) has numerous programs for its beneficiaries. The job was to see how these programs are dispensed at the ground level especially in a pandemic like situation.
  • Evaluated the service provision and infrastructure at the four levels and determined if they were according to the Public Health Standards of India.
  • Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) are integral to the fabric of NRHM and often act as the bridge between the community and the government. It is these ASHAs who provide care to numerous mothers (expectant and those who've delivered) and children along with doing their part in local surveys, COVID activities, IEC activities etc. Worked individually to understand the job of an ASHA in a holistic manner
  • Identified areas for improvement through a systematic qualitative research by conducting interviews and focused group discussions with the ASHAs.
