Detection and Characterisation of antibiotic resistant E.Coli and coliforms in waste water treatment plants in Edinburgh
Anti-microbial resistance is a major emerging threat to the quality of water and human
health globally. Urban waste water treatment plants in which concentrations of
resistance-driving antibiotics and high density of microorganisms are present is a
potential hotspot for antibiotic-resistant bacteria and horizontal transfer of genes.
Result
The abundance of bacteria in treated wastewaters puts a question mark on the processes
involved in waste water treatment. The results imply that though the resistance to
cefotaxime wasn’t alarming, more potent measures might be needed in the future to
remove antibiotic resistant bacteria from the wastewater to reduce the potential spread
of the resistance into aquatic environment.
