Ph.D Researcher

Visva-Bharati University
Santiniketan
11.2016 - 12.2022
  • My PhD research focused on submergence tolerance in rice, particularly exploring escape strategies in unexplored landraces from lowland flood-prone areas of South Bengal.
  • I characterised these genotypes using agro-morphological, physiological, biochemical, and molecular methods to identify unique submergence-tolerant varieties suited for prolonged flooding.
  • The preliminary screening included 26 unique rice lines, the flood-tolerant variety FR13A, and the sensitive check IR42.
  • Following physiological and molecular screenings, five landraces along with two additional genotypes, Swarna and Swarna-Sub1, were selected for detailed study.
  • These genotypes were analysed during germination, early seedling, and vegetative stages, focusing on physiological behaviour and biochemical adaptations, including carbohydrate content and the activities of pyruvate decarboxylase (PDC) and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH).
  • Morpho-anatomical research showed the development of aerenchymatous air spaces in the internodal region, which function as snorkels during submergence.
  • These studies aid in selecting landraces that thrive in prolonged deep-water flooding.
  • Ultimately, the characterization of the most suitable rice genotype through a functional genomics approach elucidates the genetic factors and pathways related to flooding responses, providing a valuable framework for understanding traditionally tall rice lines in the lowland flood-prone regions of South Bengal, West Bengal, India.

Future Goals

I would love to continue independent research in my area of expertise by securing a faculty position at a university where I can establish my own lab or research group, focusing on topics that I have nurtured so far during my Ph.D and could teach, mentor graduate students that will help me to learn and explore more. I would love to collaborate with other institutions or organisations across the globe by leveraging the international connections. This could lead to joint projects, publications, and cross-disciplinary innovations.
