Senior Consultant - Cardiac And Aortic Surgery. Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Gurugram

Summary

I would describe myself as a Cardiac Surgeon not by profession but by passion. Cardiac surgery was my dream during the school days and I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to fulfill my professional dream. I have set the following targets for the rest of my professional life -

A) Development of cardiac surgery -

Globally, there has been a lot of technical progress in the last decade in the field of cardiac surgery - specially aortic surgery, minimally invasive and robotic surgery and mechanical circulatory devices. I believe that these are the future of cardiac surgery and I want to work towards further development of these subspecialities in our country so that we are comparable to the best of cardiac surgical centres of the world.

B) To make cardiac surgery available and accessible to every Indian

Cardiac surgery has very limited permeation in the Indian Health System and at the ground level, cardiac surgery is not available readily to the masses. I have been working aggressively in this aspect through a big outreach program managed by me in the neighboring states of U.P, U.K., Bihar and Haryana. I believe we need to establish a robust referral system so that the complex cardiac diseases are managed at the quaternary care centres to achieve good end result.

C) To change the way people think about cardiac surgery:

Cardiac surgery is generally thought of as a very high risk and very painful treatment which infact is nothing more than a myth and almost all the elective cardiac surgical procedures can be done with minimal surgical risk and almost no morbidity. My entire practice revolves around making the procedure safe and very comfortable for the patient.

B) Patient and Family satisfaction: I believe in extensive patient counseling and timely sharing of all information related to the treatment so that there is a healthy doctor patient relationship leaving no scope for any misconceptions and disbelief in the treatment given.

C) Result oriented approach: I and my team always analyzes our surgical results periodically and there is thorough introspection with the aim of how to further refine our strategies so that we can provide even better results and minimize complications. Any mishappening in a case would bring about a very honest and intricate assessment of our steps so as to ensure that we don’t repeat our mistakes.

D) Academic excellence: I am very active in attending and organizing workshops and CME programs frequently held at my Alma mater AIIMS and elsewhere where there is lot to learn from international as well as national stalwarts in various fields of cardiac surgery. I want to take this further and want to be a part of an academic institute to further organize training programs and put in efforts to develop better cardiac surgeons for future.

Work History

Senior Consultant - Cardiac and Aortic Surgery

Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Gurugram
Gurugram
06.2018 - Current

I was given the task to establish the cardiac surgery program at this newly recruited unit of Narayana Health. My journey started from developing the Cardiac OT and ICU infrastructure and then I developed a dedicated team of passionate and experienced cardiac anesthetists, physician assistants, perfusionists and trained OT and ICU nursing staff. The idea was to develop a comprehensive cardiac surgical program where all cardiac and aortic surgeries are performed with excellent results. We started our clinical work in August 2018 and along with a highly talented and dedicated team I performed the entire spectrum of Adult Cardiac surgeries, Aortic Surgeries, LVAD implantation and Pediatric Cardiac Surgeries. We were able to delivery good surgical results even in very high surgical risk patients with acceptable morbidity and mortality (Detailed review of surgical results is attached as a separate document).

Consultant Cardiac Surgeon

Medanta - The Medicity
Gurugram
01.2016 - 06.2018

During my tenure at Medanta, I worked as the Senior member of the team lead by Dr. Anil Bhan. This is the busiest cardiac surgical unit of NCR where we would perform an average of 5 open heart surgeries everyday. The surgical work included the most complex Aortic Surgeries besides the regular coronary, valve and pediatric cardiac surgeries. A major achievement was developing the heart transplant program. I was actively involved in getting the transplant license and spent time with transplant unit at AIIMS to develop the pre- transplant workup protocols, immunosuppression and post transplant protocols. We performed the first heart transplant at Medanta in 2016 and during my subsequent stay at Medanta we performed a total of 6 heart transplant with 100% success rate. The surgical experience gained by me at this high volume unit was unmatched both in terms of diversity (all cardiac and aortic surgeries) and volume (approx 2000 open heart surgeries). This experience has been instrumental in making me an independent cardiac surgeon capable of managing almost anything in cardiac surgery.

Assistant Professor - CTVS

All India Institute Of Medical Sciences
New Delhi
07.2014 - 12.2015

The biggest opportunity I have had so far in my professional journey was to work as a faculty at the most premier cardiac surgical unit of the country. This position gave me an unmatched opportunity to develop my surgical skills and clinical understanding to manage even the sickest of patients successfully. I had the extended opportunity to work under the guidance of the AIIMS faculty, specially Prof Balram Airan and Prof Shiv Kumar Choudhary. I was given the responsibility to independently run one cardiac OT and most of the clinical work was advanced aortic surgeries, valve surgeries and coronaries. I was also a member of the heart transplant team and an active member of the academic team responsible for organizing various workshops and CMEs.

Senior Resident - CTVS
