• Diatom Diversity in Eastern India
• The study revealed several ecologically rich pockets in Eastern India supporting diverse diatom growth. A total of 175 species were recorded, with pennate diatoms predominantly inhabiting freshwater ecosystems, while centric diatoms were prevalent in marine environments. Notably, 50 new reports of the species especially from India were documented during the investigation, underscoring the need for further studies to gain a complete understanding of diatom diversity in the region.
• The majority of diatoms belonged to the Class Bacillariophyceae, with the family Gomphonemataceae hosting most of the identified taxa. Among pennate diatoms, the genus Gomphonema was dominant, whereas Thalassiosira emerged as the most frequently recorded centric genus. Diatoms were collected from diverse physiographic zones, including hilly regions, foothills, riverine plains, deltaic mangroves, and coastal plains.
• From these collections, 52 species of diatoms from five freshwater regions of Eastern India were randomly selected for distributional analysis using multivariate approaches. Biodiversity analysis identified Gomphonema, Nitzschia, Achnanthidium, and Sellaphora as the most abundant genera among the 63 genera studied. Rarely occurring genera included Fragillaria, Ulnaria, Achnanthidium, Eunotia, Pinnularia, Navicula, Sellaphora, Placoneis, Hantzschia, and Iconella.
• Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) investigations revealed critical ultrastructural features essential for species-level identification. For instance, the keel or canal raphe system is a defining feature of orders Bacillariales and Surirellales, while loculate pore structures and the presence or absence of setae on valve surfaces distinguished genera like Coscinodiscus and Thalassiossira. The presence of a central nodule, fibulae fields and stigmata on the valve surface served as key identifiers for the order Cymbellales.
• Biotechnological Potential of the Isolated Strain
• Diatoms have emerged as valuable resources in biotechnology, with applications spanning aquaculture, nanomaterial synthesis, and bioelectronics.
• Aquaculture Applications: The processed biomass of Halamphora subturgida, when mixed with commercial fish feed in a 75:25 ratio, significantly improved the growth and coloration of goldfish.
• Nanotechnology: The frustules of H. subturgida proved to be excellent bioreagents for synthesizing Ag- SiO2 nanoconjugates in dendritic forms. These nanostructures are highly crystalline, stable, and exhibit potential for various applications, including bio-sensing, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), electronic device design, and medical technologies. Compared to conventional methods, this biogenic synthesis is cost-effective and minimizes environmental drawbacks.
• Bioelectronics: Diatom-derived silica was used to fabricate nanoscale electronic devices, demonstrating superior performance due to the enhanced dielectric properties of SiO2 layers. These devices exhibited reduced leakage current, improved reliability, and exceptional longevity (up to 1000 cycles) compared to other methods. The biogenic SiO2 offers a novel, cost-effective alternative for growing high-quality SiO2 films on p-Si substrates, making it a promising material for gate dielectrics in semiconductor-based MOS devices and circuits.
• Conclusion
• This investigation underscores the biodiversity of diatoms in Eastern India and highlights their immense potential in biotechnology. From aquaculture to advanced electronic applications, diatoms present sustainable, cost-efficient solutions with broad implications for ecological and industrial advancements.
