Projects Journey

  • Started with making an IoT based Autonomous car during class 8. This made me experiment and explore this field.
  • Then, during class 12, I learned python and MySQL and made a USB-Key based secure database system aimed at providing researchers a better way to manage their precious data.
  • During my Freshers' year, I made a mini project based on graphics.h, in which i made a partially functional graphical virtual compute, which can be interacted with the input of the computer it is displayed on.
  • Then, I got a project idea of making a fully autonomous acoustic fire extinguishing robot. I started it with a simple rover based imperfect prototype. I built a turret that would track the fire and would hold the acoustic fire extinguishing mechanism easily.
  • For Fire detection, I first went with OpenCV library, used color thresholding and other Image processing techniques to create a mask that contains fire only, and i would map it to turret for tracking. This had a lot of drawbacks, including the point it was very light sensitive.
  • Then I learned to use Deep learning Neural Networks, Which made me learn Keras and Tensorflow. I had also learnt various ML techniques simultaneously as it was a part of my degree course. I was able to understand the math behind all these thanks to my teachers.
  • This made me make DL - transfer learning based fire-detection model. I used various architectures and algorithms like FasterRcnn, SSDMobileNetV2 and so on, Combined with image preprocessing to get better results. The results were better but not accurate. The lighting condition and other feature of fire significantly reduced the usability of the model.
  • This made me realize that even a simple looking project had to be planned, researched, implemented and tested and then repeat. Budget and time were major factors to be managed too. So, I started researching on better ways for fire detection.
  • Then i was introduced to advanced aspects of DL, that included Vision transformers, BERT, LSTM and other sequence2sequence architectures. I then came across a new type of neural networks, Spiking neural networks, whose neurons work more similar to the neurons of our brain, as they use a pattern of pulses to propagate features. They are highly efficient and can easily adapt to dynamic nature of input signals, which is the perfect use case of our project.
  • So, I am currently researching on spiking Neural networks and planning to use them in BEiT (BERT for images) and combine it with certain preprocessing techniques and implement it on my robot for testing. The progress is slow as it is difficult to get more knowledge and resources to do this. I am currently writing this paper, aiming to publish it.
  • I also plan to research on and efficient and simple indoor navigation system for my robot so that it can easily navigate to a place where it is called from a mobile app.
  • I would also like to research upon realtime language translation (Speech to speech) so that any two persons who do not share any language in common could communicate easily.
  • For the sidekicks, I do mini ML and DL projects here and there, for my assignments and hobbies, which makes me learn and be confident when it come to this field. For example, recently i was working on Lumbar spine degenerative classification, to predict which spine will first get damaged and why.
  • I am always eager to learn and explore new ideas and challenges. I find satisfaction in tackling complex problems and breaking them down into simpler solutions.
