Research

  • Fellow Research Scholar, COEP Technological University, 2022, Present, Institutional Doctoral Fellowship Scheme [IDF]-2022, Tunnelling through the fragile terrain of the Lesser Himalaya presents significant challenges, including issues with tunnel stability, such as squeezing rock masses, fault zones, geological folds, high overburden, and water seepages. To address these challenges, selecting appropriate excavation methods and construction sequences is crucial to ensure face stability and control over standup time. This research aims to compare excavation methods for enhancing face stability in a Mega Tunnel. Actual geological and geotechnical parameters from a site of Rishikesh- Karanprayag BG Rail line project of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) in the Lesser Himalaya were utilized for reliable results. Computational analysis was conducted using finite element analysis, focusing on vertical displacement of the tunnel crown to assess face stability at various stages of excavation. Parametric studies were performed to understand the effects of water pressure on tunnel displacement and stress trajectories. The study concludes that ring-cut excavation provides better displacement control initially, followed by the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), and later on the mechanized excavation. Additionally, in utilization Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) techniques, accurate estimation of pressure parameters is essential to prevent TBM jamming issues. Research proposes a methodology for determining a suitable machine and its pressure parameter for implementing the success of TBM tunnelling method in the Himalayan region to avoid and mitigation of machine jamming/blocking risk. Relation of Cutterhead Torque (TQ) and Machine Thrust (TH) were developed with tunnel diameter (D) using FEA. This research provides valuable insights for project planning in the lesser Himalayan region.
  • Research Study, University of Technology Sydney, UTM Malysia, Prediction of Penetration rate and Advance rate in tunnelling plays vital role in any tunnel project for successful completion of project with respect to time and cost. This research study conduct the prediction of these parameter using Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning Techniques (AI/ML). Particularly this study conducted with association of researcher from University of Technology Sydney, And UTM, Malysia. I acknowledge Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), Uttatakhand and Herrenknecht India Pvt Ltd, Chennai for the support during this research.
