01.2024 - 06.2024
  • Patented research project: AN ANTHOCYANIN-INFUSED STARCH-BASED BIOPOLYMER FILM FOR REAL-TIME FOOD SPOILAGE DETECTION AND METHOD, and has been submitted to the regional Indian Patent Office - Chennai (RefApp. No. 202541040640 filed on April 28, 2025).
  • This project aimed to develop an intelligent, eco-friendly food packaging film by integrating anthocyanins extracted from red cabbage into starch-based bioplastics. These bioplastics were designed to act as pH-sensitive indicators for food freshness, making them particularly suitable to detect spoilage in products such as meat and dairy.
  • Keywords: Starch, Bioplastic, Glycerol, Anthocyanin, Silver Nanoparticles, pH indicator, Food Packaging
  • Key Contributions: Extracted and purified anthocyanins from Red Cabbage (plant source) using ethanol-methanol solvents, rotary evaporation, and HPLC characterization to check purity and identify particular metabolites. Further tested the anthocyanin color response through a pH sensitive assay and estimated the concentration of the extract. Synthesized an optimal and efficient starch-based biopolymer via the solvent casting method, incorporating glycerol as a plasticizer and varying anthocyanin concentrations.

  • Project 2: Anthocyanin-Infused Starch Bioplastics: A Novel Approach for Enhanced Wound Healing via In Vitro and In Vivo Studies.
  • This interdisciplinary project explored the development of a multifunctional wound dressing using anthocyanin-loaded starch bioplastics with integrated silver nanoparticles. It aimed to evaluate their efficacy in accelerating wound healing through a combination of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial mechanisms.
  • Affiliation: Department of Biophysics & Public Health Genomics, MSLS, MAHE
  • Mentors: Dr. Nirmal Mazumder (Guide), Dr. Bharath Prasad (Co-guide)
  • Key Contributions: Designed and synthesized starch-based bioplastics loaded with anthocyanins and AgNPs, using solvent casting methods. Performed in-depth chemical characterization: FTIR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, HPLC for anthocyanin profiling.

  • Company Overview: A Govt. Registered Research Company
  • I worked on a project that targeted brain cancer by reactivating the silenced p14ARF gene, crucial for stabilizing p53 and inducing tumor suppression. This project presented a fascinating opportunity to implement processes such as drug dialysis, SDS-PAGE, RT-PCR, Extraction of DNA/RNA from agarose gels, ELISA, agarose gel electrophoresis, PCR primer design, DNA Extraction from Bacteria, Isolation of membrane-soluble proteins, and Gelatin Coomassie Blue Staining.
  • A Govt. Registered Research Company
  • The project focused on the epigenetic modulation of p14ARF in brain cancer treatment, targeting the brain tissue of glioblastoma-bearing mice, with key objectives to reverse promoter methylation and histone modifications, thereby restoring p14ARF expression.
  • Certificate of Internship: This is to certify that Ms. Shreya Shambuling Shahapur pursuing BSc Biotechnology from Manipal School of Life Sciences has done Internship under the field of Biotechnology.
