Swathi H Nair

• Provide patient care under supervision in wards, outpatient departments (OPD), and emergency settings, including history taking, physical examinations, diagnosis, and basic management.
  
• Rotate through core and allied disciplines such as Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Community Medicine, Anaesthesia, and others.
• Assist in medical procedures, sample collection, and minor surgeries or interventions.
• Perform day-to-day ward duties, chart maintenance, documentation, and follow-up of admitted patients.
  
• Support hospital staff in rounds, presentations, and maintaining case records.
• Participate in health camps, immunization drives, and community outreach programs, including a mandatory rural stint as part of the internship.
  
• Receive hands-on exposure to laboratory diagnostics, radiology, and infection control practices in hospital settings.
• Learn and practice basic emergency management including first aid, resuscitation techniques, and acute care.

Clinical & Diagnostic Responsibilities:

• Perform and supervise a wide range of microbiological diagnostic tests including bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, and immunology.
• Interpret laboratory results accurately and provide critical input to the clinical teams for patient diagnosis and management.
• Participate actively in infection control programs monitoring hospital-acquired infections and antimicrobial stewardship initiatives.
• Collaborate with clinicians during rounds and consultations to advise on microbial infections and optimal antibiotic use.

Laboratory Management:

• Oversee daily operations of the microbiology laboratory ensuring strict adherence to quality control, safety protocols, and compliance with institutional and national guidelines.
• Manage the calibration, maintenance, and proper use of laboratory equipment and supplies.
• Train and supervise junior residents, interns, and laboratory staff in microbiological procedures and best practices.

Academic & Research Contributions:

• Mentor undergraduate and postgraduate students through teaching sessions, case discussions, journal clubs, and practical demonstrations.
• Engage in clinical and laboratory-based research projects, contributing to data analysis, report writing, and presentations at conferences.
• Keep abreast of advances in microbiology and infectious diseases by participating in continuous medical education (CME) activities.

Administrative & Quality Assurance:

• Maintain accurate documentation and timely submission of laboratory and infection control records.
• Assist in preparation and coordination for internal and external audits required for accreditation and quality assurance.
• Liaise effectively with other hospital departments to streamline microbiology diagnostic services and infection control efforts.
