  • I took care of my grandfather with the help of my grandmother. He had Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, Parkinson’s and cancer.
  • I got him up, whenever he wanted to. Given he had dementia, he was unaware sometimes of what time it was.
  • I would get him up, make the bed and help him get ready. Due to his illness, he would take longer than usual to get ready. I’d encourage him to take a shower, get dressed, I was patient and calm with him.
  • I never treated him like a patient, but family. I spent a majority of my childhood there with them, even having the school bus take me to and from there.
  • I would cook or serve breakfast, give him his meds, make snacks and do activities with him including crosswords, watch tv and play games.
  • I’d help my grandmother with housework, cooking and taking care of him. He’d get meds again after dinner and before bed.
  • I’d spend time with him while my grandma was out running errands.
  • When he went to the nursing home in summer of 2023, I spent time with my grandma. She didn’t need much care but I knew she was lonely. As she got older she got slower, but never became feeble or anything. She’d cook, I’d help. She had someone come on certain days to clean and do housework and I’d help if needed. In October of 2023 their house was sold. My grandfather died in December of that year and my grandma at the time lived with my aunt. Then after multiple hospitalizations due to issues with her heart and lungs, she is now in a nursing home where I visit and call frequently.
