Gemstones
It has been more than 5 years now, since I stepped into the gemstone industry and gaining strength in this field, by training and learning about the most valuable gemstones. I come from the colored stones cutting center of the world, Jaipur, India, where I got the opportunity to learn about cutting, faceting, grading, assorting and other manufacturing essentials of gemstones like, Emeralds, Rubies and Sapphires.
Over a last few years I have gained my expertise in manufacturing, grading and pricing Emeralds, but I have always been attracted to various other types of gemstones as well, which has led me to learn more about their characteristics, pricing, origins and other important aspects.
Ever since I began training for manufacturing of emeralds under my father, who is a founder and leader of a successful gemstone establishment for last 30 years, I have gotten opportunities to attend several emerald auctions, hosted by companies like, Gemfields and other Zambian mining organizations, on invitations. Being regular at auctions has been a major factor in contributing to my skills on rightly pricing a gemstone.
Apart from visiting auctions, I also travel to gemstone trading shows like the Hong Kong gem and jewelry show and Tucson gem and mineral show, to name a few.
Here are some of the tasks I perform while working at KK Gems Trading Co. (2016 - present) :-
Ø Graded up to 250 round brilliant, fancy shapes and mounted diamonds (180 required as per the course)
Ø Scored 87% in the final 5-stone exam for diamond grading which included plotting inclusions and blemishes in the diamonds, ranging from .15cts. to 2.00cts., as one of the major objectives of the exam.
Ø Assessed the 4c’s in an identical manner as of the original GIA reports
Ø Graded and identified treatments, their procedures and essentials and its influence in the trade
Ø Was able to exchange valuable knowledge and information about the gemstone industry with the GIA instructors themselves, which worked as a great motivational factor
Ø Graded approximately 250 colored stones per week and loupe graded gemstones where natural/synthetic calls had to be made specially for corundum and emeralds.
Ø The course offers to practice instruments like, refractometer, polariscope, spectroscope and dichroscope based on their requirements for their respective tests, which I could master by the end of the course
Ø Identified almost 1900 stones, which also included identifying mounted stones with the help of loupe, also estimating their weight alongside
Ø Maintained an average of 100% on the stone count every week for both diamonds and colored stones
Ø Passed the final 20-stone exam for colored stones in the 1st attempt out of 5 provided.
