Joined State Bank of India (SBI) as Probationary Officer in December 1988 and have worked with this institution till January 2025 i.e. over 36 years. During probation, underwent training in various areas of banking. Retired as Chief General Manager (CGM) in January 2025.
The probation period of two (2) years from December 1988 to November 1990 involved extensive training in various areas of banking i.e. Retail, Corporate, International etc. It also included Operational and Institutional environments.
Served as Field Officer (FO) in a rural area of Andhra Pradesh, engaging with villagers to fulfill credit requirements. Conducted regular visits to villages, identified and underwrote customers, interacted with borrowers and village leaders, and periodically verified documents to reduce risk.
Introduced new models and practices that transformed rural banking operations, enhanced trust between bank and customers, and significantly improved branch performance over two years, laying a strong foundation for future roles.
Post completion of successful rural assignment in 1992, based on pan India competition, was selected for overseas assignment (in New York). In overseas assignment, handled Dealing Room/Treasury back office function i.e. inter Bank settlements, adherence to exposure norms etc. Handled this assignment also successfully.
Major part of career (around 27 years) has been in Commercial/Wholesale banking and Stressed Asset Resolution verticals. Experience in these two verticals has been right from Middle Management to Top Executive Grades (Chief General Manager). This experience spans entire Loan Life Cycle i.e. Drafting/putting in place Loan Policy guidelines, Pre-Post sanction credit processes, Risk mitigation, Regulatory Compliance, Stressed Asset Resolution etc.
In Commercial Banking (i.e. Mid Corporate Group & Corporate Accounts Group), April 2003 to August 2017, dealt with diverse industries/sectors (Manufacturing & Services) like Steel, Cement, EPC, Food Processing, Auto Ancillary etc. pan India. During this period, exposures handled included Large/Medium corporates as well as MSMEs. The ticket size varied from few hundred to thousands of crores under various banking arrangements. Each of these industries possessed unique features and cyclicality.
The role play in Commercial Banking i.e. Relationship Manager, Branch Head etc. envisaged Due Diligence on borrowers, Under writing standards, Post sanction processes etc. for existing/new customers and achievement of Account plans/Budgetary targets. Besides satisfactory customer identification/assessment/funding etc., understanding industry and putting in place suitable mitigation played a critical role in protecting stakeholder interest. These functions were undertaken within overall Regulatory guidelines, Board policies etc.
In Commercial Banking, borrower’s external ratings were from investment grade (and above) to otherwise (i.e. below investment grade) with later category involving critical support in times of stress/cash flow problems. Monitoring cash flows for all category of borrowers were ensured. For below investment grade borrowers, suitable specific measures were implemented for early identification of stress, corrective action etc. to mitigate risk of default.
Achieved top and bottom line targets while ensuring asset quality and implementing risk mitigation strategies, resulting in improved borrower financial profiles, enhanced viability, and protection of stakeholder interests.
Have been in Bank’s Stressed Assets Resolution Vertical (SARG) from September 2017 to December 2023. During this period, worked as Deputy General Manager/General Manager/Chief General Manager and resolved several medium/large borrower accounts (i.e. NPAs) from diverse industries/sectors and complex debt structures. The resolutions were through Soft and Hard recovery methods i.e. Debt Restructuring, Compromise, CIRP (under IBC) etc.
In SARG, resolved stressed assets from diverse industries/sectors like Steel, Textiles, Power, EPC, NBFC etc. with many from RBI’s List – I/II of June/August 2017. Apart from substantial debt, there were value erosion posing additional challenge to Bank(s). To mitigate position, steps like scenario analysis, resolution strategy, co-ordination with stakeholders, adopting suitable litigation strategies etc. were implemented. Simultaneously, interacted with Government, RBI, Legal Advisors etc. on various aspects to streamline resolution framework. Consequently, stressed accounts were optimally resolved in time bound manner. Lastly, resolutions resulted in substantial recoveries, clean up of books/NPA reduction, write back of provisions, freeing up capital etc. for SBI as well as entire Banking system.
As a corollary, several stressed entities were revived which has benefitted eco system at macro level. The learnings in stressed asset resolutions have also been suitably factored in by SBI/Banks in Loan Policies, Practices, Legal framework etc. and a better credit market has evolved.
In addition to resolution of stressed assets, drafted Board policies for Wilful Defaulters, Classification of Frauds, Compromise Settlements etc. and related SOPs Further, have been member of various in-house and external committees i.e. Credit Committees, IBA, Inter Ministerial Committee etc.
Oversaw bank’s network of 65,000 ATMs, successfully replaced 28,000 machines across India, leading to improved availability, increased customer convenience, and enhanced profitability through strategic initiatives. Retired as Chief General Manager (CGM) from SBI on 31st January 2025.
While quantitative aspects like top/bottom lines, budgets, value maximisation etc. were achieved in various assignments over 36+ years’ service in SBI interests of stakeholders were also optimised. Lastly, possess satisfactory qualitative skills like Communication, Leadership/Team Building/Team Work, Solution oriented approach etc.
