Carmel Jeeva Mary

Chennai

Summary

A dedicated PhD graduate with a strong background in chemistry, with expertise in nanomaterials, environmental remediation, and anticancer research eager to explore the integration of artificial intelligence with chemical research, seeking job opportunities to apply my advanced expertise in a dynamic and challenging environment. Committed to contributing to your esteemed institution through cutting-edge research, innovative applications of AI in chemistry while further cultivating my passion for scientific discovery and academic excellence. I wish to put forth my abilities and dedicate myself to the challenging environment.

Work History

Synthesis of Magnetic Nanocomposites:

*
Chennai
  • I worked on synthesizing copper ferrite (CF) and copper ferrite/reduced graphene oxide (CG) magnetic adsorbents using a microwave-assisted combustion method. These materials are designed for efficient removal of barium ions from water.

Heavy Metal Ion Removal

*
Chennai
  • My research emphasizes the development of cost-effective and facile approaches for removing heavy metal ions, such as barium, from aqueous environments, contributing to environmental remediation efforts.

Nanomaterials for Environmental Applications

*
Chennai
  • My studies involve the physicochemical characterization of nanomaterials, including crystallite size and specific surface area, to enhance their adsorption capabilities for environmental pollutants.

Synthesis of Graphene-Based Nanomaterials

*
Chennai
  • i had investigated the fabrication of water-soluble reduced graphene oxide (rGO) using thiourea through a cost-effective method. This involves producing graphene oxide (GO) via a modified Hummers method using raw graphite powder and oxidants like KMnO₄, NaNO₃, and 98% H₂SO₄.

Cytotoxicity and Anticancer Activity

*
Chennai
  • My studies demonstrate that both GO and thiourea-mediated reduced graphene oxide (T-rGO) exhibit concentration-dependent toxicity against HT-29 colon cancer cells. These materials cause a decrease in cell viability, DNA fragmentation, and morphological changes, with GO showing a stronger cytotoxic effect (IC50 of 15.6 µg/mL) compared to T-rGO (IC50 of 31.2 µg/mL). Flow cytometry analysis confirmed these cytotoxic effects, indicating their potential as anticancer agents.

Mechanism of Action

*
Chennai
  • The research highlights that GO and T-rGO influence cell structural integrity and substrate adherence, with treated cells showing more defined, columnar, and epithelial-like features compared to untreated cells. These changes suggest that the nanomaterials disrupt cancer cell morphology and adhesion, contributing to their anticancer efficacy.
  • My work emphasizes the development of affordable and effective nanomaterials for biomedical applications, particularly in cancer therapy, with a focus on colon cancer. For detailed insights, my publications can be accessed via platforms like MDPI or PubMed

Summer Training

*
Chennai
  • Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL), Manali, Chennai, Characterization of Petroleum Fractions using HPLC, Removal of Nickel from wastewater using Low Cost Adsorbents: A comparative study

M.Sc. Project

*
Chennai
  • Removal of Nickel from wastewater using Low Cost Adsorbents: A comparative study.
