Summary
Shahina’s mission is to create artificial intelligence based systems that better the lives of people and society. Towards this, she works on applying machine learning, deep learning and reinforcement learning algorithms in the fields of healthcare and speech technology. She heads the Machine Intelligence Research Lab (MIRL) at SSN. Shahina’s research group focuses on harnessing the potential of artificial intelligence to amplify human intelligence. The teams work on various projects that involve human brain and speech. They include converting thoughts to speech for the neurologically induced speech impairment, epilepsy detection and localization, diagnostic tools for neurodegenerative diseases, building speaker recognition and person authentication systems.

- I have 25 years of teaching and research experience. I head the Machine Intelligence Research Lab (https://www.ssn.edu.in/machine-intelligence-research-lab-mirl/) at SSN.
- My research interests include brain computing, speech technology, and other deep learning applications in computer vision and sequential data.
- Currently, I have four ongoing funded projects from SERB, Govt. India, ST Microelectronics, USA, and MeitY, Govt. India as principal investigator. Along with this, I am guiding 5 internally funded projects. I have completed 7 projects.
- I have authored more than 100 research articles in well refereed journals and conferences, including Q1 journals.
- I have brought in projects and consultancy worth Rs. 1 crore in a span of 1 year (2023-24).
- I teach Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Information Theory, Computer Organization, among others.
