PATENT

“Ignition pellet for TLUD cookstoves,” Indian patent Application number: 202211064746.

Ignition of cookstoves using solid biomass fuel can be difficult particularly in humid and cold weather. Many improved biomass cookstoves use biomass pellets as fuel. Ignition of these pellets can be even more challenging due to their high density. Generally, the fuel-bed of these pellets takes a few minutes to ignite even with the use of diesel, kerosene or any other liquid fuel. Besides, the emissions during the ignition period are high. There has been attempts to simplify the ignition process but none of the prior art discloses about special pellets for ignition. Moreover, the method of preparation is cumbersome and use of additives and binding agents in pellet making is needed in earlier reported work. In the present invention the ignition pellets are made with combination of wax and biomass combustible particles and used for starting the fire in the biomass cookstove quickly. Our ignition pellets are special pellets to be used only for ignition of the bed. This work reports development of ignition or starter pellets of suitable density to ignite a solid fuel bed in a cookstove. This is based on the fact that for ignition, a low-density fuel is required
but it must also burn at a rate such that it allows the bed to catch a flame before it is completely combusted.

COMMERCIAL PROJECTS

  • Enhancement of the flame temperature for TLUD cookstove

The primary aim of the project is to enhance the flame temperature of Eco-Chulla cookstove resulting in decrease in emissions and better   efficiency.

  • Improvement in the ignition time of TLUD cookstoves

The ignition time of TLUD cookstove is improved by use of ignition pellets. A patent has been filed for Ignition pellet.

The project is collaboration between RUTAG, IIT Delhi, India and Eco-sense Appliances Pvt ltd., Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India

Duration of the Project - 1 year ( April 2021-April 2022).

  • Improvements in a Cookstove “Prathamesh-2” developed jointly by M/S Meensou India and CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar

The objectives of the work are as follows:

            a) Testing of the cookstove Prathamesh-2 to determine its thermal efficiency and CO and PM2.5 emission factors.

            b) Suitable modifications in the stove to improve its efficiency beyond 35%.

Budget of the Project-3.75 Lakh. Duration- (April 2023-Sep-2023)

ACADEMIC PROJECTS:

Ph.D. - “Development of Guidelines for Design of TLUD Cookstoves”

The main objective of this work is to do identify the key parameters for the design and development of forced draft TLUD gasifier for domestic applications. To achieve this objective various commercially available TLUD cookstoves have been studied and flow and pressure drop characteristics have been determined in the first phase. In the latter phase experimental analysis has been carried out considering various operational and design parameters. The experiments have been done to identify avenues to improve the flame temperature, and hence the performance of a commercially available TLUD cookstove. Mathematical analysis has also been done on reburn, stratified and TLUD gasifier configurations to predict the exit gas compositions and biomass burn rates for different operating and design parameters.

M.Tech. – “Combustion, Performance and Emission Analysis of a Light Duty Diesel  Engine on Blends of Mahua oil Biodiesel and Diesel.”

Experimental analysis has been done on variable compression engines to determine the combustion, efficiency, emission, and smoke characteristics of Diesel engines using blends of Mahua oil Methyl Ester and diesel. The main objective is to determine the potential utilization of Mahua Oil (Madhuca Indica), a locally available seed, as biofuel as well as blended fuel.

B. Tech – “Computer Aided Designing of Capillary Tube for Domestic  Refrigerator, A.C. & Water Cooler.”

Select a capillary tube for design perspective with proper bore and length of the tube so that the compressor and tube fix a balance point at desired evaporated temperature.

Analytical calculation is done to evaluate the pressure drop in a capillary tube and to determine the incremental length of the capillary tube.

OTHER PROJECTS:
