Projects Summary

  • A Study on Present Status of Naliya Grassland, Kachchh, Gujarat, India, This study was related to evaluate the importance of the Naliya Grassland and its current status of degradation. Field work for the study was carried out during the month of July, 2014. It was found that the grassland is rich in biodiversity that supports number of species like the three species of the Bustard Family (Great Indian Bustard, Lesser Florican and Houbara Bustard) Spiny tailed Lizard, etc. that are endangered and vulnerable. It was noted that various anthropogenic factors exerts tremendous pressure on the grassland and led for its degradation. Due to overgrazing, agricultural practices and invasion of Prosopis juliflora has resulted in slow degradation of the grassland. It is crucial to conserve and manage the grassland through the active participation of the local communities.
  • Studies on the Intertidal Biodiversity of Kachchh coast, Gujarat, A comparative study was undertaken to examine the intertidal biodiversity of the three different shores of the Kachchh coast. The three different sites chosen for the study area were Tragadi (Muddy coast), Nana Layja (Rocky coast) and Luni (Sandy coast). A total of 15 live species of intertidal organisms were recorded from the quadrates in the three sites. Shannon-Wiener and Simpson's diversity index, Margalef's richness index and Pielou's evenness index were calculated. The study concludes that amongst the three sites, Nana Layja showed to have the highest species diversity compared to the other two sites and the species diversity list results show that Gastropods were recorded highest in number followed by Crustaceans in the three sites.
